Identity

The Thai people are the dominant ethnic group of Thailand (population ~70 million), speaking Thai (a Tai-Kadai language) and predominantly practicing Theravada Buddhism. The Thai identity is closely intertwined with Buddhism, the Thai monarchy, and a strong sense of national independence -- Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never colonized by a European power. The Thai diaspora is relatively small compared to other Asian labor-exporting countries, but significant communities exist in the Gulf states, United States, and neighboring Asian countries.

Culture & traditions

Thai culture is characterized by Theravada Buddhist values (merit-making, karma, respect for monks), the wai greeting (hands pressed together), elaborate cuisine (pad thai, som tam, green curry, tom yum), classical dance forms (khon, lakhon), and deep reverence for the monarchy. The concept of 'sanuk' (fun/enjoyment) pervades daily life. Thai boxing (muay thai) is both a sport and cultural tradition. Food culture is central to social life -- communal meals, street food traditions, and the balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy flavors define Thai cuisine.

Religious practices

Theravada Buddhism is deeply embedded in Thai identity. Temple visits, merit-making through food offerings to monks, and observance of Buddhist holidays (Vesak, Asanha Bucha, Loy Krathong) are central. Spirit houses (san phra phum) reflect the blend of Buddhist and animist traditions. In Saudi Arabia, Buddhist practice must be entirely private -- no temples, no monks, no public ceremonies. Workers may maintain small personal Buddha images for private devotion, though these risk confiscation.

Gospel access

Full Bible available in Thai. Jesus Film available. GRN has audio recordings. Christianity is a very small minority in Thailand (~1-2%). The community is predominantly Buddhist with deep cultural attachment to Buddhist identity.

The Blue Diamond Affair (1989-2022)

In 1989, Kriangkrai Techamong, a Thai servant employed at the palace of Prince Faisal bin Fahd, stole 91 kilograms of jewelry including a 50-carat blue diamond. The aftermath spiraled into murders of Saudi diplomats in Bangkok and the disappearance of a Saudi businessman. Saudi Arabia responded by stopping work visas for Thais, downgrading diplomatic relations, and discouraging Saudi tourism to Thailand. The Thai worker population in Saudi Arabia collapsed from 150,000-200,000 to approximately 10,000 by 2008. The blue diamond was never recovered. Full diplomatic relations were restored on January 25, 2022, ending one of the longest diplomatic disputes in modern Gulf history.

Population
~3,000 (est. 2,800-3,500)
Location
Cairo: Nasr City, the Al-Azhar quarter and Madinat al-Bu'uth; a few in other university cities

About 3,000 Thais live in Egypt, nearly all of them Muslim students at Al-Azhar and other Egyptian universities. Most come from Thailand's far south, where most Muslims speak Patani Malay at home and Thai at school, and they spend years in Cairo learning Arabic, Islamic law and the Quran on Al-Azhar scholarships or their families' savings. The Thai Students' Association in Cairo, active since the mid-1950s and under royal patronage, runs a student centre, meets new arrivals and organises study circles, sports and festivals. Many graduates return to teach in the Islamic schools and mosques of southern Thailand.

Location
Farming moshavim and kibbutzim of the Arava, the western Negev near Gaza, the Jordan and Beit She'an valleys, the Upper Galilee and the Sharon

Thai farm workers, around 38,000 people, do much of the planting, picking and packing on Israel's farms and are the country's largest foreign agricultural workforce. Nearly all are young men from the poor rice-farming villages of Isan in north-east Thailand, who come on five-year contracts under a bilateral agreement and send most of their wages home. They live in caravans and barracks beside the greenhouses of desert and border communities, from the date and pepper farms of the Arava to the kibbutzim beside Gaza. On 7 October 2023 Thais were the largest group of foreigners killed and taken hostage, yet the workforce has since grown past its pre-war size.

Population
~6,300 (6,000-9,000)
Location
Mecca and Jeddah (most), Medina; a few hundred in Riyadh, the Eastern Province, Tabuk, Khamis Mushait and Najran

About 6,300 Thais live in Saudi Arabia, and most of them are Muslims from Thailand's south living in Mecca and Jeddah: students at the Islamic universities, spouses and long-settled families, and workers in the pilgrimage trade. Many come from the far south, where most Muslims speak Patani Malay at home and Thai at school and with officials. A smaller group of Thai workers, many of them men in their fifties and sixties who have stayed for decades, is scattered from Riyadh to the Eastern Province, Tabuk and Najran. Relations froze for three decades after a Thai servant stole jewels from a Saudi prince's palace in 1989 and Saudi Arabia stopped issuing work visas to Thais; ties were restored in 2022 and a labour agreement signed, so new Thai workers, most of them Buddhists, have begun to arrive. Buddhist Thais have no temple in the kingdom and keep their faith in private.

United Arab EmiratesDiasporaVerified presence
Population
~19,000 (est. 15,000-22,000)
Location
Dubai (over 60%), Abu Dhabi city and Musaffah, Al Ruwais, Sharjah and Ajman

About 19,000 Thais live in the United Arab Emirates, more than half of them in Dubai, working in hotels, restaurants, spas and airlines, and as technicians at the oil refineries of Ruwais and in the factories of Musaffah. They come from every part of Thailand, including many from the north-east who speak a Lao dialect at home, and a minority of Muslims from the south. With no Thai temple or resident monks in the country, Buddhist rites gather at the Thai embassy in Abu Dhabi and the consulate in Dubai, where at the April New Year festival of Songkran Thais pour water over Buddha statues and over the hands of their elders to ask their blessing. Recruitment for spa and massage jobs has drawn some Thai women into trafficking, and many workers lack proper papers.
