Identity

The Tamil people are a Dravidian ethnic group indigenous to Tamil Nadu in southern India and northern/eastern Sri Lanka. Tamil is one of the world's oldest living classical languages, with a literary tradition spanning over 2,000 years dating to the Sangam period. With over 77 million speakers, Tamil is one of the most spoken languages globally. The name 'Tamil' possibly derives from 'Dravida' through Prakrit. Tamil Hindu civilization produced distinctive temple architecture (Chola temples are UNESCO World Heritage Sites), the Bharatanatyam classical dance form, and Carnatic music tradition. The 'Hindu traditions' qualifier in this JP entry distinguishes Hindu Tamils from Tamil Muslims and Tamil Christians, though these communities share language and many cultural elements.

Culture & traditions

Tamil culture is one of the oldest continuous civilizations, characterized by classical arts (Bharatanatyam dance, Carnatic music), a rich literary heritage (Thirukkural ethical text, Sangam poetry), and elaborate temple traditions. Food includes dosa, idli, sambar, rasam, pongal, and coconut-based dishes. The Pongal harvest festival (January) is the most important Tamil celebration. Family structure emphasizes education, respect for elders, and arranged marriages within caste networks. Tamil cinema (Kollywood) is a major cultural industry. The community maintains strong regional identity and language pride.

Religious practices

Tamil Hindus practice a distinctive form of Hinduism centered on Murugan (Kartikeya), the patron deity of Tamil culture, alongside Shiva, Vishnu, Mariamman (village goddess), and Ganesh. Temple worship is central, with major temples like Meenakshi Amman (Madurai) and Rameswaram serving as pilgrimage destinations. Folk Hinduism includes village deity worship, kavadi (pierced burden) festivals for Murugan, and fire-walking ceremonies. In the Gulf diaspora, Hindu practice must be entirely private -- home shrines, private prayer gatherings, and fasting observances substitute for temple worship.

Gospel access

Full Bible available in Tamil in multiple translations. Jesus Film available in Tamil. GRN has extensive audio recordings. A significant Christian minority (~12%) exists among Tamils, including both Catholic and Pentecostal communities. Tamil Christians have active churches in Tamil Nadu and across the diaspora. JP classifies this group at Scale 2 (minimally reached) rather than unreached, reflecting the existing Christian presence.

Hindu Tamils from Tamil Nadu, with a smaller number of Sri Lankan Tamils, have worked in Bahrain since the oil boom, as construction and oil-sector labourers, technicians, drivers, shop staff, engineers, accountants and teachers. They keep a lively Tamil cultural life around the Indian Club in Manama, where the Bharathi Association's Pongal brings thousands to boil rice in milk in clay pots, eat a 23-dish vegetarian feast on banana leaves and watch children perform Karagattam pot-balancing and Kavadi dances. Most worship Murugan, Shiva, Amman goddesses and Ayyappa at home shrines and at Manama's Hindu temples, while a significant Christian minority, including Catholic fishermen from Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli who crew Bahraini fishing boats, worship in Tamil congregations.

Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Al-Khobar, Jubail; smaller numbers in every city

Hindu Tamils in Saudi Arabia, about 180,000 people, come from two countries: labourers, drivers, technicians, engineers and office staff from Tamil Nadu in south India, and a smaller number of Tamils from Sri Lanka's north, east and tea-growing hill country, many of them domestic workers. Most Indian Tamils are men living without their families, in construction camps, the oil and petrochemical towns of Dammam and Jubail, and the offices and shops of Riyadh and Jeddah. The kingdom has no temple and forbids public non-Muslim worship, so Murugan, Vinayagar and Amman are honoured at small shrines in flats and rooms, and Pongal and Deepavali are kept indoors among friends. A Christian minority from the far south of Tamil Nadu and from Sri Lanka's Catholic parishes meets quietly in private homes.
