Identity

The Sindhi people are an Indo-Aryan ethnic group native to Sindh province in southeastern Pakistan and the adjacent Kutch region of India. Sindhi identity is rooted in the ancient Indus Valley civilization — Sindh is one of the oldest continuously inhabited regions in the world. The name 'Sindhi' derives from the Sindhu (Indus) River. Sindhi Muslims form the majority in Pakistan's Sindh province, while Sindhi Hindus, displaced during the 1947 Partition, form a global trade diaspora. The Sindhi language is written in a modified Arabic script (Nastaliq) in Pakistan and Devanagari in India. Sindhi culture is deeply influenced by Sufi mysticism, with the poetry of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai and Sachal Sarmast forming the core of the cultural canon.

Culture & traditions

Sindhi culture is characterized by Sufi devotional music, colorful Ajrak textile prints (block-printed cloth that is a symbol of Sindhi identity), the Sindhi topi (cap), and distinctive cuisine featuring biryani, sajji (roasted meat), and Sindhi fish preparations. The Sufi tradition of saint veneration and communal urs (death anniversary) celebrations at shrines like Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai's in Bhit Shah and Qalandar Lal Shahbaz in Sehwan is central to Sindhi cultural life. Family structure is patriarchal, organized around biraderi and tribal affiliations. Hospitality is deeply valued.

Religious practices

Sindhi Muslims are predominantly Sunni following the Hanafi school but are deeply influenced by Sufi traditions. Shrine devotion is central to Sindhi religious identity — the annual urs celebrations at major shrines are both religious and cultural events attracting millions. Sufi orders (Qadiriyya, Suhrawardiyya) have historically shaped Sindhi Islam into a tolerant, pluralistic tradition. In diaspora settings like Saudi Arabia, Sufi shrine practices are impossible under the Wahhabi environment. Workers attend local mosques but the devotional Sufi character of Sindhi Islam is suppressed. Private dhikr gatherings may occur informally.

Gospel access

The full Bible is available in Sindhi. The Jesus Film is available. GRN audio recordings exist. However, virtually all Sindhi workers in Gulf countries are Muslim, and proselytizing is restricted or illegal. No significant Christian presence exists among Sindhi Muslims.

Sindhis in the Emirates are two communities that share a language. The older is Hindu merchant families from Sindh, above all the Bhatias of Thatta, who came to Dubai's Creek as traders before the oil era and made Bur Dubai's textile souq their own; their descendants, over 25,000 people, run trading, gold and exchange businesses and worship at the Jebel Ali Hindu temple run by their Sindhi Guru Darbar trust. The larger is Sunni Muslims from Pakistan's Sindh province, working as drivers, crane operators, labourers and technicians in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, who carry the Sufi devotion of Shah Abdul Latif's poetry with them. Every December both meet at Sindhi Cultural Day in Dubai, wearing the block-printed ajrak shawl and mirrored topi cap and dancing to Sindhi folk songs.
