Identity

Western Punjabis are the Punjabi-speaking Muslims of Pakistan's Punjab province, the country's largest people, with smaller numbers in Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and the cities of Sindh. The Punjab ('five waters') was divided in 1947: its western, mostly Muslim half went to Pakistan, and millions of Muslims moved west while Hindus and Sikhs moved east, so Pakistan's Punjabis are almost all Muslim and India's are mostly Sikh and Hindu (the group 'Punjabi'). They speak Western Punjabi (Lahnda), written in the Shahmukhi (Perso-Arabic) script, with the Majhi dialect of Lahore as its standard; Urdu, Pakistan's national language, is the language of school, office and public life, and many educated families speak Urdu at home.

Society is organised in biradari, patrilineal kin groups such as the Jat, Arain, Rajput, Gujjar and Kashmiri, which shape marriage, politics and work. Punjabis fill much of Pakistan's army, civil service and business, and are the largest share of its emigrants: labour migrants in the Gulf states and Libya since the 1970s oil boom, most of them men who leave their families at home, and settled communities in the United Kingdom and North America.

Culture & traditions

Village life in the Punjab rests on canal-irrigated farming of wheat, rice, cotton and sugarcane, and on the biradari and its elders. Marriages are usually arranged, often between cousins within the biradari, and celebrated over several days (mehndi, baraat, walima). Food is wheat-based: roti and paratha with lentils, saag and yoghurt, lassi, and meat dishes for guests. Men and women wear the shalwar kameez, women with a dupatta. Family honour (izzat) weighs heavily, above all on women's conduct. Folk culture is rich: bhangra and luddi dances to the dhol drum, the Sufi poetry of Bulleh Shah, Sultan Bahu and Waris Shah's Heer Ranjha sung as kafi and qawwali, and the spring kite festival of Basant, restricted by bans in recent years. Abroad, community life gathers around mosques, the embassy and its schools, and shared meals at Eid.

Religious practices

Western Punjabis are Sunni Muslims of the Hanafi school, with a Shia minority. Most Sunnis follow the Barelvi tradition, which honours the saints: crowds visit shrines such as Data Darbar in Lahore and Baba Farid's at Pakpattan, keep the saints' death anniversaries ('urs) and the Prophet's birthday, and seek blessing and healing from pirs. The Deobandi and Ahl-e-Hadith movements reject shrine devotion, and Tablighi Jamaat preaching is widespread. Belief in the evil eye, amulets (taweez) and jinn is common. Abroad, Punjabi workers pray in local mosques and keep their Hanafi customs.

Benghazi (about 3,000) and the east; Sirte, Sabha, Brak and a few in Tripoli

About 4,300 Pakistanis live in Libya, a remnant of the 150,000 who built roads, housing and oil installations in the 1970s and 1980s. Most are thought to be Punjabis, as most Pakistani emigrants are, with Pashtuns from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa among them; they work as electricians, technicians, builders and factory hands. Two-thirds now live in Benghazi, where Pakistan is opening a consulate as its ties with the eastern authorities grow, and the Pakistani community school there has taught children since 1973. Libya has also become a launching point for young Pakistanis trying to reach Italy by sea, and dozens have drowned off its coast since 2025. They are Sunni Muslims of the Hanafi school, many keeping the shrine devotion of Punjabi Sufism.

Riyadh (Batha, Manfuha, Shumaisi), Jeddah (Aziziyah, Sharafiyah, Baghdadiyah), Mecca, Medina, Dammam-Khobar, Jubail, Taif and towns across the kingdom

Pakistani Punjabis are probably the largest single people among the kingdom's 2.6 million or more Pakistanis, about 1.3 million of them,, who have come since the oil boom of the 1970s and today make Saudi Arabia the destination of seven in ten Pakistani workers. They come from the canal colonies and barani districts of Punjab, from Sialkot, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Jhelum, Chakwal and Rawalpindi to the Saraiki-speaking south, and drive the kingdom's trucks and household cars, lay its roads, staff its workshops and restaurants, and serve as engineers, doctors and accountants. Punjabi is spoken among friends and on the phone home, Urdu in public, at the Pakistan International Schools and in the Pakistani shops of Jeddah's Aziziyah and Riyadh's Batha. Most are Sunni Muslims, many of them used to the shrine devotion and saints' days of Punjab that Saudi religious practice frowns on; for many, being near Mecca and Medina is a reason they came. A Shia minority keeps its rites indoors, and a small Christian minority, nearly all Punjabi in origin, meets in private homes.
