Romanian Jews and their children number about 180,000 in Israel, nearly the whole of a community that numbered over 350,000 after the Holocaust; fewer than 2,500 Jews remain in Romania. Most came between 1948 and 1989, many of them released by the communist regime in exchange for payments from Israel, and settled in Haifa, the coastal cities and the new development towns of the south. Their forebears had already founded Zikhron Ya'akov and Rosh Pinna in 1882. They gave Israel the roasted-eggplant salad on every table and Hasidic courts such as Vizhnitz, while the Romanian-speaking generation of survivors of Transnistria and Iași is now passing away.
