Portuguese-speaking Jews in Israel are almost all Brazilian immigrants and their families, about 14,000 people. They have come steadily since the 1950s, when Brazilians settled Kibbutz Bror Hayil near Sderot, still called the Brazilian kibbutz, and in record numbers since 2015 as recession and crime pushed Jews out of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Ra'anana, a sister city of Rio since 2021, has the largest community, some 300 families. They bring samba, churrasco and a warm sociability, and Brazilians were among those killed in the attack of 7 October 2023.
